Pat, Carbs read the post (or the subsequent ones on RMNB and the Rink)! Looks like he’s heading exactly in the direction you suggested. The thing that ties my brain in knots is how Kuzy can be so bad 5v5 and yet seems to be getting it done on the PK. Am I nuts or is he actually decent on the PK? Not saying that means he’s better than the numbers suggest at 5v5 but man is it a Kuzy-level mind f#€k!

Haha, it looks like the Caps and their number crunchers came to the same conclusion as everyone else. Great catch on Kuzy and the PK--a quick look at the numbers say the Caps PK has limited chances much better with Kuzy on the ice than when he's not. But I'm honestly not sure how much stock we should put in individual on-ice team numbers for special teams...things like system, quality of competition/teammate etc. probably play an oversized role here.

Feels like there is an element of focus/fewer degrees of freedom on the PK. Maybe less to think about out? IDK. It is puzzling that someone can be good at that and so bad at 5v5. Can it be that there are fewer decisions to make and therefore fewer opportunities for mistakes?

Regardless of coach Kuzy gets away with this lack of ... what my old timey coaches called...compete. I've always been amazed that's he's never accountable for these errors in nearly every game. He is just what he is....slightly annoying.

Agree. It takes a lot for me to question a guy's compete, because if someone worked hard enough to become a pro, he probably competes! But Kuzy's compete level is and has been so obviously below acceptable that you can't help but notice.

I just *hoped* he was actually trying and might turn things around. Carbs seems smart enough to realize that something along the lines that you’re suggesting will need to be done. At least w/ Dowd back, as you point out, he has more options. He seems to have moved him off the top PP unit and that’s a start because he doesn’t really do much for face offs or help much with puck retrieval. You can even argue there are others just as competent (or adequate) in zone entries. I enjoy reading your work man, thanks!

Yeah, I'm pleased he's off PP1. He's the most dangerous playmaker when he's on his game, but he's clearly not on his game and that unit needs a jolt.

Super helpful analysis. Now I have something to look for during his shifts when I’m at games. I have to say though that I do notice he *sometimes* gives an effort on the defensive side of the puck that I thought was missing in previous years. The underlying numbers prove that effort is not consistent though or they wouldn’t be that bad.

Thanks, Marcio! I agree Kuzy does look fine sometimes defensively. Honestly, one reason I sometimes hesitate to use game clips is because I think video can be used to support any conclusion (ex: I’m sure I could find clips of Kuzy making good defensive plays).

But yeah, like you said, the numbers are so bad that he’s obviously just not getting the job done and it was surprisingly easy to find clips to support that.

Thanks for reading and commenting.
